Pancreatic elastase is an enzyme produced by the pancreas and measured in stool as a marker of pancreatic digestive function. Because it remains stable as it passes through the digestive tract, it is used to assess whether the pancreas is producing enough digestive enzymes. Low levels may suggest reduced pancreatic function, which can contribute to poor digestion, nutrient deficiencies and gastrointestinal symptoms.
