An autoimmune disease occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own healthy cells and tissues. More than 80 autoimmune diseases have been identified, including coeliac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and multiple sclerosis. While the exact cause is often unknown, genetics, environmental factors and changes in immune regulation are thought to play a role.
