Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are highly reactive molecules that are naturally produced during normal energy production in the mitochondria. In small amounts they play important roles in cell signalling and immune function. However, when ROS production becomes excessive, they can contribute to oxidative stress and damage cells if the body’s antioxidant defences are unable to keep up.
